Using Firefox i can connect to the net and Windows Update works, IE cant reach anything and nor can any other app. Winsoc has been reset along with the usual checks on DNS etc. I can still ping out to the web without any issues. Try using FF to download the latest version of IE for your server then install from there.
I have seen bizarre things when trying to use old really old versions of IE. IE is up to date and the system is fully patched. I've got a couple of old servers that do the same thing.
I don't need internet on them so I just carry on. I need to get rid of them, but have some legacy software that won't run on anything else. IE 8 is going to be a problem in this case. The version of IE on is not supported and therefore likely never going to work, with or without a proxy, one of the latest updates likely disabled it.
Rod-IT These are third party applications that cant reach out to the internet, they dont detect a valid internet connection. Not just IE being out of date. The connection settings in IE are set to automatic. Choosing a direct connection as well results in the same issue. Current versions of many, many applications including browsers have stopped supporting Windows Server , so you may have to figure out what version of your application that function left. But have you looked at the basics as would be for any computer?

By defualt you can not browse the internet and I would advise you to download your patches from your laptop or use the automatic updates to get your patches from the server. I do this method and the internet working very good..
