Windows xp 4 bit color

I can only choose x 4bit color or x 4bit color. I removed my guest additions which were quite old but still worked yesterday , installed the latest version.

After reboot the amount of colors was ok, but after another reboot required by the guest additions, the colors were back to 4 bit. Both guests have the same problem. Any clues? The Windows driver says under 'list all modes' that only x and x is supported, both in 4 bit. Not sure if this is 8- or bit. The strange thing however is that when going into display preferences, it says it is in 4-bit mode, although it absolutely does not look like that.

I did find a solution: if you see the sloppy 4-bit screen, just log into Windows as normal. It will look ugly at first, but as soon as you switch to full screen mode, the screen turns normal again.

I've managed to scrap up together the parts from three different broken computers to build one functional computer. The computer is stuck at 4-bit color and x pixels.

I reinstalled linux after this, and I informed my teacher of this problem. He told me to try another one of his CDs, which I did. I experienced the same problem.

To test to see if it was the CDs, I installed the same CD onto a VirtualBox machine on this computer, and the install was smooth - the virtual machine functions perfectly. I've tried using two different CRT monitors, I've verified that everything is properly connected both inside the computer and peripherals Tried anything I could think of blindly, really.

In my device manager on the faulty machine, I'm getting a yellow and black! May want to go ahead and check if there is a updated driver set since your going thru the trouble and all. If it's a desktop, I would add or replace the video card.

Just to eliminate the possibility of hardware failure first. Good point. It may have tried updating itself and failed. Or the driver just needs refreshing. I tried reinstalling the driver and it's still not working right, but it boots in every other mode i. If you try to do anything with the card it goes stupid on you. I would try booting to Safe Mode, showing all installed devices, removing the vid card completely all instances, if that's the case , and the reboot into 'normal' mode and let it do it's thing.

I would shut the pc down for an hour and see if it works. Sometime hardware needs a rest - an odd but true statement, at least in my experience. I would agree it seems like a driver issue. Saw this caused by a virus the other day. Real nasty one that was infecting system files. Uninstall the video card and reload the driver from a download. Please login or register. When I left work last night I turned off my computer as usual. I do not know if anyone turned it back on and used it after I left, no one is admitting to it if they did. When I turned the computer on this morning, the resolution was down to x with 4-bit color quality.

I have no option to increase either of these settings. Also, a baloon popped up in the lower right hand corner of the screen telling me that my color settings were at the lowest.
